I. Critical Survey of Drama
Individual author essays contain brief biographical information, list of works, analysis of themes, techniques, and development of the writer’s short fiction, and resource list for further study. Volume 7 contains 29 essays covering the history, theory, and geographical development of short fiction, as well as geographical, category, and subject indexes. Arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.

II. Masterplots II: Drama Series

Contains brief critical evaluations of selected works of 20th-century drama.  Most are English-language works, but representative plays in translation from European countries are also included.  Arranged alphabetically by title of play.  Each article includes time and place of the work’s first performance, setting, principal characters, an overview of the action and plot, themes and meanings, and dramatic devices.  Cumulative author and title indexes can be found in Volume 4.

III. The Gale Series of Literary Criticism

This series provides excerpts from published literary criticism.  Each set focuses on a particular genre or period of literature.  A paperback cumulative title index is filed with most sets.

IV. Drama for Students

In-depth analyses of classic examples of drama.  Each entry includes an introduction to the play and the author, a plot summary, descriptions of important characters, analysis of important themes in the drama, an explanation of important literary techniques in the play, a critical overview, excerpts from published critical essays, and an essay placing the drama within its historical context.  The most recent volume contains a cumulative author/title index.

V. Drama Criticism

An index to critical reviews published in books and periodicals for drama of all eras.  Each volume is arranged alphabetically by author, then by play title.  User is directed to the books and periodicals that contain the essays.

RESEARCHING THE TOPIC: Books

To locate books at PJC and other Florida community college libraries, click on Find Books at the top of the LRC homepage, or click Go at Search PJC Catalog. Enter the author’s last name along with the term criticism. For example, to locate literary criticism about the works of Arthur Miller, type miller criticism into the search box.
 

RESERVE BOOKS

The Reserve Desk has a selection of books of literary criticism about individual authors.  Inquire there for books about your author.  These books may be used in the LRC for a two-hour period.

 

ARTICLES
To access the following databases, click on the Find Articles link at the top of the LRC homepage. Login is automatic from the LRC computers. From remote computers, it is necessary to log in by: 1) selecting Pensacola Junior College from the drop down menu; 2) typing the 14-digit PJC photo ID number in the Borrower ID box; 3) typing the last four digits of your Social Security number into the PIN box. Offers critical analyses and brief plot summaries of the most studied works in the history of literature, as well as biographical essays on notable authors.

Academic Search Premier
Multidisciplinary source of articles from magazines and scholarly (peer reviewed) journals. Includes abstracts (summaries) of most articles. To limit to full-text articles only, and or scholarly (peer-reviewed) journals, check the appropriate box(es).

General OneFile
