INTRODUCTION

CHOOSING A CAREER

Career Information Center. 13 vols.
Provides information on more than 3,000 jobs. Includes: definition, nature of the work, education/training requirements, getting the job, employment outlook, advancement, working conditions, earnings and benefits, and where to go for more information.

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance. 4 vols.
Gives detailed descriptions of almost 700 specific jobs. Information includes: definition, history, nature of the work, requirements (education and preparation), opportunities, methods of entering field, advancement, employment outlook, earnings, conditions of work. Career Guidance Section (Vol. 1) provides several useful points to consider when choosing a career.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

The LRC home page can lead students to many of the best career sites on the Internet. On the home page, click on “Web Sites by Subject,” then choose “Careers/Jobs.” Or, type <http://lrc.pjc.cc. fl.us/careers.shtml>in the location box of your browser. Although some of the sites are specialized, typically they allow the user to search job databases; write, edit, and post one’s resumé; visit job fairs; search employers’ sites; etc.

New users will need to register. Features of this page include a career quiz to assess users’ interests and talents, tips on composing effective resumes and cover letters, and internship opportunities.
