Using the LRC

 

Who can use the LRC?

  • PJC students, faculty and staff.

 

  • Residents of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties in Florida. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.  

 

  • Students, faculty and staff of the public universities and community colleges in Florida.

What do I need to check out material?

PJC students, faculty and staff must present the PJC photo ID card in order to charge out LRC materials.

 

 

Where do I get my PJC Photo ID?

Pensacola Campus: Building 2, next to registration, telephone 484-1942.

Warrington Campus: Bldg. 3300, telephone 484-2319.

Milton Campus: Bldg. 4200, telephone 484-4410.

Distance Learning students: email messlinger@pjc.edu with PJC ID number or SSN, or call 850-484-1942

 

Can I use my PJC Photo ID for anything else?

·        PJC students, faculty and staff may access the LRC databases remotely by using the activated PJC ID card.

·        PJC students, faculty and staff will be given reciprocal borrowing privileges at other state community colleges and universities upon presentation of a active ID from their home institution.

 

How do I activate my ID card?

To activate the ID, contact the LRC by telephone (Pensacola: 484-2002; Warrington: 484-2252; Milton: 484-4450) or email. Cards have been activated if they have been used to check out material.

 

Residents (age 15 or older) of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will be issued a borrower card at the LRC after presenting proof of local residency and a picture ID.

 

Students, faculty and staff of the public universities and community colleges in Florida may use their institution’s library card.

 

How long can I keep a book? How many books can I check out?

  • PJC students, staff may check out up to 10 items at a time for 30 days.
  • Residents may check out up to 2 items at a time for 30 days.
  • Public state university system and community college students may check out up to 6 items at time for 30 days.

 

Can I renew a book? How?

Materials may be renewed by telephone at Pensacola: 484-2002; Warrington: 484-2252; Milton: 484-4450 or online using the My Account feature in LINCC if book(s) are not overdue.

 

How much are book overdue fines?

Book fines are .25 per day.

 

Can I check out videos, CDs?

Yes, you may check out 1 (one) Overnight Video, 2 (two) CDs for 7 days.  Videos and CDs cannot be renewed.

 

How much are video and CD overdue fines?

$1.00 per day per item.

 

Can I check out Distance Learning Videos/Tapes?

Only PJC students enrolled in the Distance Learning course may check out Distance Learning Videos/Tapes. Loan periods vary. These cannot be renewed. Overdue fines are $1.00 per item per day. Do not return in the book drop (there is a damage fee of $1.00 per item per day for returning to book drop).

 

What about Reserve material?

Materials placed on Reserve may be searched using the Reserve Room link from within LINCC, the online catalog. Borrower restrictions vary. Reserve material cannot be renewed. Overdue fines are $1.00 per item per day. Do not return in the book drop (there is a damage fee of $1.00 per item per day for returning to book drop). Some instructors have placed their reserve materials online.

 

I lost the book/video/CD! What happens?

Contact your campus LRC at immediately at (Pensacola): 484-2002; (Warrington): 484-2252; (Milton): 484-4450. A bill will be mailed to the borrower the day after the item becomes 40 days overdue. Amounts posted on the bill may not include all monies owed. A borrower is assessed $35.00 per lost item and all fines which have accumulated. The maximum fine is $20.00 The total may be as much as $55.00 per item. Once library material is declared lost by either the patron or the library, a "hold" is placed on the patron's record.  No additional library materials may be charged out.  Students may be delayed during registration, unable to receive grants or scholarship funds.  Transcripts will not be released to students who have a monetary obligation to the LRC.

Finding Information

 

How do I find a book at PJC?

Use LINCC, the online catalog.

 

I just want to browse for a book. Where did you shelve the books in my subject area?

The LRCs use the Library of Congress Classification System to catalog all books, including fiction, biography and a very few children’s books.

 

How can I find a magazine, journal or newspaper in the library?

Perform a title search in LINCC or look on the periodical shelves, alphabetically by title of magazine/journal. For location of newspapers, check with the Reference Librarian.

 

I need an article. Where do I look?

Use online resources that index articles in magazines, journals and newspapers. Access to online resources is available from all campus LRCs.  Remote access is available for PJC students, faculty and staff.

 

You don’t have what I need! Help!

Check LINCC to see if other Florida community colleges have the needed material. From the LRC home page, check the online catalogs of the University of West Florida and the West Florida Regional Library if you need the material immediately. Otherwise, you may request an Interlibrary Loan. An interlibrary loan (ILL) is a transaction in which library material, or a copy of the material, is made available by one library to another upon request. Only students and employees of Pensacola Junior College are eligible for ILL service. You will be contacted when the material arrives. Allow between 5 and 10 working days for delivery. Online resources

 

What resources are available online?

Databases that index articles from magazines and newspapers (many available full text) and databases that contain reprinted material from reference sources are available online at all campus LRCs. Tip sheets for using these databases can be accessed online. An e-books collection of over 1100 titles is available through the LINCC online catalog. Some instructors have put their course reserve material online available from the Online Reserve Room

 

Can I access these from off-campus?

PJC students and staff can access all online resources with their activated PJC ID card.  Start at the LRC homepage and use the drop down menu under Find Journals & Newspapers or click here to connect directly to the databases login screen. Please note that there are many items available in print which are not yet available online. These include the vast majority of our books and reference material.

 

How do I find the full text of articles online?

Several databases available to PJC faculty, staff and students contain the full text of articles. The one's with the most full text articles are Academic Search Premier and Custom Newspapers.

 

I can’t connect to the databases!

Make sure cookies are enabled and that your browser is Java capable. Use your activated PJC ID card. to login. For further help, contact a Reference Librarian

AOL users should connect to the Internet with AOL, reduce the application, then open Microsoft Internet Explorer. Those that have a firewall may need to reduce the security in the firewall, or disable it.

 

Where can I get a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader so I can read articles from databases online?

Research help

The LRC has a Research Paper Help site to assist researchers. Help is also available from Reference Librarians whenever the LRC is open both in person and over the telephone (Pensacola) 484-2002; (Warrington) 484-2252; (Milton) 484-4450). There is also an Ask-A-Librarian email form. Statewide libraries offer reference chat services Monday - Friday from 9 AM - 9 PM Central time.

 

Computers, printers, scanners, copiers in the LRC

 

PJC computer equipment is for educational use. PJC students have priority in the use of all equipment.

 

What software is available?

Microsoft Office XP (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and others) and Internet Explorer.

 

Can I save my work on your computers?

Yes, but all LRC PCs have a software program which deletes jobs saved as soon as the PC is rebooted. For this reason, it is a good idea to save all material to a floppy disk. Diskettes can be purchased in the Pensacola LRC Circulation Desk only when the campus bookstore is closed.

 

Can I load my CD onto your computers?

Yes, but all LRC PCs have a software program which deletes programs added as soon as the PC is rebooted.

 

Do your computers have writable CD drives?

Yes, some PCs at each campus LRC do.

 

Do you have computer  printers?

Yes, the LRCs have networked printers at each location.

 

Do you have color computer printers? Scanners?

We do not have color computer printers. The Pensacola and Milton LRCs have scanners.

 

Do you have copy machines?

Copy machines are available in the LRCs. Copy cost is .05 cents per page. Copy cards are available from a dispenser for $1.00 with a charge of .50 for the card and 10 copies. After initial purchase, you may update your card balance for $1.00 for 20 copies.

 

What about microfilm/microfiche copiers?

The LRCs have microfilm/microfiche copiers. The charge is .15 per page.

 

Services for Distance Learning Students

Services for Faculty

How long can I keep a book?

Faculty may check out books for the entire academic term.

 

How can I get help for my students in using the LRC?

Please tell them to ask for help from a Reference Librarian. You may also request a library workshop or arrange to bring your class in without library instruction. Please call your campus LRC Reference desk at (Pensacola): 484-2006; (Warrington): 484-2252; (Milton): 484-4450.

 

Can I bring my class to the LRC to work?

Yes. Please notify your campus LRC Reference Desk ((Pensacola): 484-2006; (Warrington): 484-2252; (Milton): 484-4450) of your plans. All PJC students have access to LRC computers on a first-come, first-serve basis.

 

Can a librarian teach my students how to research?

Yes. You may request a workshop in the LRC or in your computer lab or your classroom. A librarian will prepare a workshop targeting your students’ research needs. Call the Reference desk at: Pensacola: 484-2006; Warrington: 484-2252; Milton: 484-4450.

 

I want to prepare a library assignment. Is there someone who can help me?

Yes. Reference Librarians at all campuses ((Pensacola): 484-2006; (Warrington): 484-2252; (Milton): 484-4450) can assist you in preparing a library assignment for your class. Librarians can also help you test your assignment to be sure that your students will be successful. If you need some hints on preparing an assignment, please check the suggested  Instruction Links located at the LOEX Clearinghouse for Library Instruction.

Contact LRC Staff or use the material request form.

 

I need research help. Whom should I contact?

How can I donate material to the LRC?

The LRC accepts donations for possible inclusion in the collection. Donations are accepted in the name of the Pensacola Junior College Foundation. Materials not needed in the LRC collections will be made available for purchase at the annual LRC book sale. Gift items may be brought to the Circulation Desk at any of the three campus libraries. What facilities/services does the library have for patrons with special needs?

The Pensacola campus LRC computers are equipped with Windows XP accessibility features.  The Pensacola campus also has a Visualtek reader.  All campus LRCs have magnification equipment available for print material.
